PEI Expertise in Health to Present at Senate
Nov 28, 2007

Patsy Beattie-Huggan, President of The Quaich Inc., has been formally invited to appear before the Sub-committee of the Senate in Ottawa on Wednesday November 28 to discuss the population health reforms in Prince Edward Island from 1991-1997.

The Subcommittee on Population Health of the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology is studying the impact of the multiple factors and conditions that contribute to the health of Canada's population, known collectively as the social determinants of health.

Patsy, with a broad background in Nursing Education, will share her experience of her time served as the Director of Community Development (Health Promotion, Development and Research) of the PEI Health and Community Services System between 1994-1998.

“This is a great opportunity to discuss the lessons learned from a very unique and grounding experience,” says Ms. Beattie-Huggan, “and also to demonstrate that the vision and relationships continue to live on in the community.”

Ms. Beattie-Huggan will also discuss the innovative and collaborative work around the Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities for which she is the Coordinator. She will also describe her creative work in health promotion around the popular Circle of Health, based on values and incorporating the social determinants of health, the Ottawa Charter, and the First Nations Medicine Wheel.
