On November 29th, The Quaich Inc. facilitated and presented at a meeting of the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults (ALCOA) Regional Advisory Committee, in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Patsy Beattie-Huggan, Annette Penney-Maurer, Nathalie Francois and Judy McKnight attended the meeting and presented a progress report on a project The Quaich Inc. is completing for ALCOA, which includes an environmental scan and online survey.
The Quaich Inc. is the regional coordinator for the Atlantic region project, for which ALCOA received a grant through the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The goal of the project is to support the Enhanced Canadian Diabetes Strategy by identifying best practices of community-based interventions targeted at primary prevention of type 2 diabetes in older adults.
The project will conclude with a national meeting in Ottawa in February 2008, which will generate a national framework for the implementation of best practices related to seniors and active living / healthy eating / diabetes issues.
This initiative will increase awareness and improve attitudes amongst high risk populations, resulting in healthier behaviours among seniors and a final outcome of improved health and well being.
